BeachesAlthough most beaches are composed of quartz sand, the fragments may be as large as boulders, or composed of some other material such as carbonate skeletal or shell fragments. Sources of beach material include sediment carried by rivers or eroded from cliffs or the seafloor, or biological material such as coral.
The book is reviewed in this issue, and will be of particular use to tutors for professional development plans. Bandolier will try to use some of these ideas in future.
Death jolted a tranquil Thai island last week when Katherine Horton, a British holidaymaker, was beaten, probably raped, then left to die on Lamai beach, Koh Samui. Her father, Ian, said it all: Katherine came to Thailand to dance on a beach, to ride an elephant, to have a vacation before her finals at university. Tragically her faith in her fellow man let her down and she has been taken from us for ever. Thai police are questioning four Thai men seen on motorbikes at the time. Katherines companion, Ruth Adams, has gone home. But life on the beach goes on, and so does the party, for this is not the survival challenge portrayed in the book and film The Beach, based on an island off the Thai coast.
Cargo Systems
July 23rd, 2008
DALLAS — Aloha Airlines, Inc., will install and implement Cargo Data Managements browser-based booking, tracking, and revenue accounting system to manage its air cargo operations. The two companies announced today that they have signed a five-year contract for the hosted cargo system. Aloha Airlines will use Cargo Data Managements browser-based cargo reservation and tracking system and its cargo revenue accounting system. As part of the hosted service, Cargo Data Management is managing all of Aloha Airlines data on an Oracle 10G database, running on a Linux operating system, at Cargo Data Managements hosting facility in Dallas. The browser-based booking and tracking system is available to all of Alohas employees and general sales agents who book and track freight on the Aloha system, explained Garner McNett, president of Cargo Data Management. Anywhere there is an Internet connection, an Aloha employee or agent can use this system.
Representative Sherwood Boehlert of the 23rd Congressional District, New York, was instrumental in achieving Cargo Mates inclusion and funding in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. This funding by the Federal Department of Transportation proves that Cargo Mate is a valuable component in the search for an integrated Hazardous Materials Incident Management System that ensures the safe movement of hazardous materials by road, rail and ocean carriers, stated Albert Lane Jr., President of PGSC. I also want to mention that PAR, as well as the entire Mohawk Valley, are very fortunate to be represented by Congressman Boehlert, and PAR appreciates the concern and devotion the Congressman has for Central New York and the 23rd Congressional District. Forward-looking statements in this release are made pursuant to the safe harbor provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Investors are cautioned that all forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties, including without limitation, risks in technology development and commercialization, risks in product development and market acceptance of and demand for the Companys products, risks of downturns in economic conditions generally, and in the transaction-processing information systems sector of the manufacturing/warehousing industries market specifically, risks of intellectual property rights and litigation, risks associated with government contracting, risks associated with foreign sales and high customer concentration and other risks detailed in the Companys filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Prenatal Vitamins
July 22nd, 2008
ST. LOUIS–(HealthWire)–August 20, 1996–Bock Pharmacal Company today announced the launch of Prenate(R) Ultra(TM), a new and unique prescription prenatal vitamin which utilizes a form of iron 100 times less toxic than the form used in traditional prenatal vitamins.
ALPHARETTA, Ga. — First Horizon Pharmaceutical(R) Corporation (NASDAQ: FHRX) today announced the introduction of OptiNate(TM), a premium prescription prenatal vitamin with an innovative, all-natural, vegetarian-sourced omega-3 fatty acid predominantly in the form of DHA. OptiNate complements First Horizons Prenate Elite(TM), the number-one prescribed prenatal vitamin in the United States. Pregnant women should ensure that the prenatal vitamins and supplements they take have an adequate amount of DHA, says James A. McGregor, MD, Visiting Professor of Ob/Gyn at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. All women considering pregnancy and who are pregnant or breast-feeding should obtain nutritional supplementation containing optimal amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and other micronutrients, along with excellent baseline nutrition. DHA is found mainly in fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, but most Americans get inadequate amounts in their diets. An added concern is that both the U.S. FDA and the Environmental Protection Agency advise women who are pregnant or may become pregnant to limit their intake of these and certain other types of fish due to a concern over ocean-borne contaminants.(7)

home remodeling north carolina
July 22nd, 2008
As your familys needs change, so should your home. This Dallas kitchen had been remodeled three times prior to this update to accommodate changing needs. Each previous owner was careful to stay true to the homes original design, and it was equally important to current residents Kathy and Sam Leake that they respect that tradition as well. They worked to open up the room-improving both the amount of natural light and traffic flow. Plus, attractive design details give the space a cozier feel. The kitchen now connects to the dining room through two doors that permit traffic to flow freely from one area to the other. “The openness changed the home from a 1950s ideal, where the kitchen was hidden from public view, to a contemporary floor plan that showcases this room as the heart of family and entertaining activities,” says architect Stephen B. Chambers, who worked on the new design.
Not every remodel is a total success. Roughly eight years ago, this little Sacramento farmhouse underwent a front-side remodel that gave the former owners neede floor space but destroyed its charming bunglow character. To restore a bit of the houses original style while creating a new garage and maste suite, designer Brent Smith of Loomis, California, developed the facade you see on the facing page. Current owners Susan and Tim Bloom added a few of their own ideas and did much of the finish work themselves. Borrowing from heavily framed Craftsman-era facades, Smith designed an unusual and striking pergola of round wooden poles–used as columns and overhead–to accent and stretch the horizontal plane of the house and better define the entry. He also added a broad, fenced-in entry deck that wraps around one side of the house, and two new gables–one above the existing bay window and one sheltering the front door. To puntuate the layers of adornment, Smith and the Blooms settled on a bold combination of blue and red stains for the pergola and trim. They also reclad the house in shingles, its orginal exterior.
The inside of the stately, 88-year-old building overlooking the city from the top of State Street looks more like some sort of ancient ruins these days than the Utah State Capitol. Heaps of broken tile flooring are piled throughout the first floor, which also has chunks of original clay tiles exposed along the exterior walls. Theres no sign of the glass display cases, and the office walls are gone, too, as the building undergoes a $200 million remodel. Several feet of earth have been excavated in some spots, adding to the rubble. The dusty scene is lit only by portable lights strung here and there, and roaring gas flame heaters used to keep the building temperature up for workers and to protect its artwork.

Pocket gophers are fossorial (burrowing) rodents–so named because they have fur-lined pouches outside the mouth, one on each side of the face. These pockets, which are capable of being fumed inside out, are used for carrying food. Pocket gophers are powerfully built in the forequarters and have a short neck; the head is fairly small and flattened. The forepaws are large-clawed and the lips close behind large incisors. This feature allows them to use their incisors for digging without getting a mouthful of dirt, a unique feature to gophers. There are over 30 species of pocket gophers in the Western Hemisphere. Pocket gophers vary in size from 5 1/2 inches in length to over 13 inches in length. Litter sizes vary from one to 10 but typically average three to four. In the northern part of their range they have one litter per year, as opposed to up to two in the southern ranges. Young gophers are dispersed above ground and are capable of swimming as well on the search for suitable habitat to begin new burrow systems. Pocket gophers feed in three ways: they feed on roots, above-ground vegetation, and they pull vegetation into their tunnel to be stored in food caches for later consumption. In the vineyard, pocket gophers girdle vines, damage roots systems (most often in new plantings), and cause multiple-irrigation problems by promoting erosion and damaging drip lines. They are solitary little beasts, vigorously maintaining and defending their tunnel system. Depending on the species and available habitat, gopher population density may vary from six to eight per acre, to up to 62 per acre. Gophers do not hibernate and only cohabitate during the breeding season The burrowing activity of one gopher produces up to 70 mounds in one month. So how do you control such an active but solitary rodent? The fact that a gopher is solitary works to your advantage. You have three basic pest management tools for gopher control: Biological control, chemical control and trapping.

SAN MATEO RESIDENT Alan Merrifield, who owns a San Francisco pest control business, sees the California Structural Pest Control Board as a nuisance.Merrifield, 66, believes that with more than three decades of practicing non-toxic pest control, he should not have to obtain a state license that requires a two-year apprenticeship and would include using pesticide on rats, pigeons and other “pests.” So Merrifield, with the help of Pacific Legal Foundation, is suing the Structural Pest Control Board and California Attorney General Bill Lockyer. “Ive rejected this license because I dont want to go out and use pesticides,” Merrifield said. “And, also, in order for me to (obtain) this license Id have to close down my business for two years and at the age of 66, go out and become someones apprentice.”

The New Fly Fishing Basics
At sea on our escort carrier we enjoyed watching flying fish as they leapt from the water, spread their wings and accelerated to flying speed by sculling with the bottom of their tails to remain airborne, skipping from wave to,wave. One day we saw a Navy pilot imitate a flying fish. We used to perch on a deck adjacent to the stern watching takeoffs. One day a pilot was launched at the wrong interval. As a result, he left the bow of the carrier as it pitched downward toward the sea. A moment later the bow rose, blanking our view of the plane and leaving us with sinking feelings as to the fate of the pilot. A few seconds later, when the bow dropped down, we saw the aircraft, practically on the tips of the waves, straining to gain a few more feet into the air. It looked just like a flying fish, bouncing from wave top to wave top. It did everything but wiggle its tail to get airborne! You can bet that pilot had plenty to say to the flight officer when he returned. Had he landed in the water, the ship would have run over him with virtually no chance of escape.
Fishing FlyAll varieties of sport fishing depend on the attraction of the fish to the lures. Fishing lures form a large category of artificial devices used to attract the fishs attention and lure it to the hook. Within the range of fishing lures, flies are the most beautiful. The three broad varieties of flies imitating the life cycles of flies and other insects; these are nymphs, wet flies, and dry flies. The nymph stage is the larval form of the insect that lives on stream bottoms. Wet flies are fished from below the surface and may look like dead or drowned bugs or insects that are either hatching themselves or laying their eggs. Dry flies look like insects floating on the water surface; they can resemble two stages in the flys life cycle; either its first flying days after hatching from the nymph stage or the mature fly landing on the water after having mated.

Finnish industrial group Fiskars Corporation said on Thursday (2 September) that its subsidiary Fiskars Brands Inc would focus on its branded core consumer products and was divesting its non-core garden furniture manufacturer Syroco in the US. Syroco has a total workforce of some 300 in several locations across the US and reports net sales of some EUR33m, according to the company.
LYON, France — Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report related to the worldwide home industry is now available to its catalogue. This report analyzes the worldwide markets for Garden Products in US$ Million. The major product segments analyzed are Garden Plants Seeds, Lawn Garden Care, Garden Tools Implements, Garden Furniture, and Garden Accessories.
At the end of the nineteenth century landscape architects were voicing strong opinions about what might be suitable for a garden seat. William Robinson wrote: It is rare to see a garden seat that is not an eyesore. And by 1918 Gertrude Jekyll offered her opinion in her book Garden Ornament that for Gardens of lesser pretension we may have wooden seats, either of hard wood or painted. The common habit of painting garden seats a dead white is certainly open to criticism. She believed a shade of gray or some very quiet tone of green were better choices. Chelsea Excentrics is a line of garden furniture the design of which is overseen by Julian Chichester. It is manufactured by Henry Hall Designs. a firm founded in San Francisco in 1989. The furniture is based on several British sources. A group of designs dating to the Victorian era is derived from pattern-book illustrations found in the library of Edward John Barrington Douglas-ScottMontaga, third Baron Montngu of Beaulieu, in Hampshire. A chair (illustrated above) and matching bench known as the Leagrave, is drawn from a design created in 1900 for a garden by Jekyll. who would have appreciated the fact that these chairs and benches are fashioned from teak, which weathers to a beautiful silvery gray.
New York Limo Tours
July 17th, 2008
Limousine services are a vital part of daily life or many Central Pennsylvania companies. Just ask Barb Gabler, executive assistant to Stephen L. Gurba, president and CEO of Bulova Technologies in Lancaster, which manufactures electromechanical devices. “I think theyre a necessary feature in business life,” Gabler said. “When their services are needed, we rely on their availability and punctuality. When we need them, we need them to be there on time.”
Limousine has diverse meanings, from an inhabitant of the region around Limoges, once called Limousin, and which in the 18th century was looked at askance as home to “an old barbarous French, formerly brought into this country out of France”. The OED overlooks the limousine which was a cloak worn by the driver of a cart whose passenger section was shielded from the elements - hence the vehicle itself and all those gaudy, dark- windowed successors which could house nine cows.
Its not every day you see the pick-up variety of limousines. But according to Brad Hollar, president of Accente Limousines, theres a need for the 20-passenger vehicle with a bed in the back. We live in Oklahoma and half the people here have pick-up trucks, Hollar said of the $125 to $150 an hour ride. A company in California custom-made the $80,000 vehicle that Hollar claims is the only one of its kind in the Oklahoma City area. Weve only had it for about 60 days. And its leased out at least every Friday and Saturday night and often during the week.

TransportationHistorically, societies have always located near water, due partly to the fact that water enables more efficient travel compared to going over land. Waterways are critically important to the transportation of people and goods throughout the world. The complex network of connections between coastal ports, inland ports, rail, air, and truck routes forms a foundation of material economic wealth worldwide.
Within freight transport, railway transport rose substantially, while maritime transport dropped by a fifth. Transport of goods by railway surged by 14.9%, and the growth of road freight transport remained strong at 7%. The rapid expansion of land transport is explained by the robust domestic GDP growth and the high increase in harbour transport (10.6%). Roughly in the middle of 2006, the global growth of maritime transport eased off, which led to several quarterly decreases in the volume of this form of transport, including the first quarter of 2007, when the volume of Slovenian maritime transport fell by 19.9%. Over the past three years, the volume of road freight transport enjoyed the highest growth (by more than 50%) within freight transport (railway transport rose by 13.8%), while harbour and maritime transport rose by over 30%. Road freight transport is the main transport activity within the transport, storage, and communications sector, which has also seen the biggest expansion in the last few years. In 2006, the three main transport activities within the transport, storage, and communications sector were road freight transport, which employed 35.8% of workers in this sector, railway transport (15.2%), and the shipping industry (6.6%; both companies and sole proprietors are included, and the latter are also counted as employees). The corresponding shares of value added generated in these three branches are 23.3%, 12.0%, and 6.3%. Looking at the structure of workers employed in transport activities within the sector in 2003-2006, the highest increase of 3.2 p.p. was recorded in the share of road freight transport, while the shares of railway transport and shipping declined by 1.3 p.p. and 2.2 p.p., respectively (a similar direction and intensity of changes was also observed in the structure of value added; see graph). The number of employees in the transport segment of the transport, storage, and communications sector rose by 2,053 to 39,028. In 2006, road freight transport employed 18,807 workers, 2,425 more than in 2003. The number of workers in the forwarding industry fell by 950 to 3,445, while the number of railway workers declined by 326 to 7,985. The decline in the volume of the forwarding industry was largely caused by Slovenias entry to the EU. Data regarding both the volume of transport and the size of the activity are unfavourable in terms of sustainable development, since cargo is still largely being moved from railways to roads, rather than the other way around.
Freight transport saw the volume of road freight transport drop in the third quarter of 2006 after three years of its robust growth. The volume of rail freight transport picked up by 4.2% in Q3, year on year, while the volume of road freight transport fell by 4.3%. International transport performed by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia decreased by just 0.8%, whereas transport within the country recorded a stronger drop of 16.1%. This was the first year-on-year quarterly fall of road freight transport since Q2 of 2003. Q3 of 2006 also witnessed a 10.2% fall in the volume of maritime freight transport. This activity registered the second consecutive year-on-year quarterly decrease, whereas in 2005 it still enjoyed robust growth (41.7%), driven by the boom in the industry. Harbour freight transport surged by 27.6% in Q3 and also recorded a high nine-month year-on-year increase (24.6%). Over the last five years, road freight transport surged by more than 50%, which was almost entirely due to the increase in international transport. In Q3 of 2006 over Q3 of 2001, road freight transport picked up by 56.5% or 1,003 million tonne kilometres (tkm). The shipment of goods out of or into Slovenia rose by 49.1% or 534 million tkm, whereas transport abroad and cabotage (the shipment of goods within another country) shot up 4.3-fold, i.e. by 450 million tkm. Meanwhile, national road freight transport increased by a modest 3.5%, or 19 million tkm. Within the EU, Slovenia is one of the few countries that perform the highest number of per capita road shipments (measured in tkm). The favourable transit position and the countrys smallness (a high share of international trade) underpin Slovenias high proportion of international transport, whose growth has been additionally boosted by the process of Slovenias integration in the EU. The last administrative barriers to carrying out freight transport abroad were removed as Slovenia became a full EU member, which led to the boom in activity seen in recent years.

The family later moved to National City, California, near San Diego. Devers first became interested in running as a child, spurred on by the taunts of her brother, Parenthesis. Since I was a young girl, Ive always been a runner, Devers recalled on the Gail Devers Website. In fact, my brother Parenthesis (P.D.) used to race me and then tease me when I lost. Well one day, I decided I was not going to

She joined the track team at Sweetwater High School, from which she graduated in 1984. Although she began her high school track career as a middle#x2013;distance runner, she eventually established herself as a sprinter and hurdler, one year winning the 100#x2013;meter dash and 100#x2013;meter hurdles, as well as taking second place in the long jump, at the state championships.Due to her performance on the track, Devers had her pick of colleges and attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she majored in sociology and trained under Bob Kersee, a legendary presence in United States track and field and the husband of Devers close friend, the sprinter Jackie Joyner#x2013;Kersee. Kersee immediately pegged Devers as a future Olympic champion and began grooming her for the games. By her senior year in 1988, Devers was ranked one of the top female hurdlers in the country. That year, she set a national record in the 100#x2013;meter hurdles with a time of 12.61 seconds and qualified to compete for a spot on the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team.
STANFORD, Calif. — Gail Devers pulled out a win, Maurice Greene pulled out of a race and Allyson Felix pulled off a remarkable feat for a teenager at the U.S. track and field championships Sunday. Devers, leaning at the finish line to edge Miesha McKelvy-Jones by one-hundredth of a second, won her ninth national title in the 100- meter hurdles. Shell seek her fourth world title in the event this August. Kelli White left the four-day meet as the biggest winner, sweeping the womens sprints by adding the 200-meter title to her 100 crown.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.

Red Jacket Red Jacket (1758-1830) was a Seneca Tribal Commander who lent support to the British during the Revolutionary War. He also fought to prevent conversions to Christianity among the Iroquios. Although Red Jacket eventually allied himself with other Indian nations in support of the British during the American Revolution, he was originally hesitant about the affiliation. This ambivalence perhaps explains why he did little fighting during the conflict. According to a number of accounts, Red Jackets reluctance to fight was perceived as cowardice by some Iroquois war leaders such as Corn-planter and Joseph Brant.
Leather JacketSoldiers of the Roman Empire invaded the lands of northern Europe and discovered Teutonic nomads wearing leather garments as protection against the harsh elements. When these soldiers returned to Rome with leather pants, the toga-garbed officials of the city tried to ban their use, but to no avail. Romans were soon using leather for shoes and tunics as well as for breastplates and shields. In fact, the first recorded tanning guild was formed in the Roman Empire.

humming bird feeders

The California Department of Fish and Game is asking Northern California residents to remove their bird feeders for at least a month to slow the spread of an avian disease. Salmonellosis has killed a number of pine siskins, small brown streaked birds with yellow patches on their wings and tails. The birds live primarily in wooded areas, and dead birds have been found throughout the forested areas of Northern California, from Grass Valley to Eureka. Birds contract the disease from each other, most often by eating fecal-contaminated food. But they can also become sick by sticking their heads in tube feeders where their eyes come in contact with the feeder itself.
1 Fruit feeder 6.79 Be the envy of your neighbours with this striking feeder. Simply place the fruit in the hole and push through the peg to hold it in place.
People rarely think of giving gifts associated with outdoor entertainment during the cold winter months, which is quite unfortunate for fellow bird lovers. A birdhouse or feeder, however, can provide much more enjoyment than a tie or fruitcake. Take this holiday season to encourage your friends to become interested in backyard ecology or spoil a longtime bird lover. A few years ago, Gary Schrodt, a successful artist, was looking for a format in which he could make his work available to the masses. His wife, herself a dedicated birder, suggested that he try designing birdhouses and feeders. Their love for the outdoors led them to found one of the first environmentally-friendly companies; Schrodt Design, Inc. uses mill trim ends for its wood products and recycled materials for packaging.

Colorado Springs-area home construction continued its blistering pace in the first quarter, although one economist fears an oversupply could drive down prices in the next few years. Single-family home building permits totaled 1,392 from January through March — a 20.2 percent jump from the same period last year, according to figures released Friday by the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department. The number of permits this year puts Colorado Springs and El Paso County on pace to shatter the record of 5,059 single-family permits, set only last year.
In an otherwise unstable economy, the housing market has remained strong, with exceptionally low mortgage rates encouraging many to buy homes, driving up home prices, and enabling homeowners to refinance existing mortgages at lower rates. Even though many analysts believe that the mortgage rates bottomed-out in mid-June and the refinancing boom may have ended, rates are still low by historical standards, and although it is slower, the demand for housing is still present.

RISK PROBLEMS/SOLUTIONS Our fictitious business, Riverside Hardware Store, Inc. (RHS), owned several vehicles, including all of the business owners personal vehicles. Besides the personal cars, RHS also owned several pickup trucks. The owners insurance company wrote the coverage using the most restrictive covered auto description that was available. The restrictive coverage is shown on the Business Auto Policys declaration page as “specified autos only.” There was no premium difference between using the broadest description of covered autos and the most restrictive definitions of covered autos. Activating “any auto” is accomplished by putting the appropriate symbol on the declarations page.
Separately, earlier this month Moodys said it has placed Chief Auto Parts debt ratings on review for possible upgrade following AutoZones announcement to buy its stock and outstanding debt. About $325 million of debt is affected, including senior unsecured notes due 2005 at B2, and senior secured revolving credit facility at Ba3. AutoZone does not have any debt rated by Moodys. The review will focus on the legal and structural position of the debt after the acquisition, and the financial strength and business prospects of AutoZone and Chief Auto.

ULTIMATELY the World Cup was a disappointment for France as their challenge fizzled out in the rain against England. Revenge will be the only thing on French minds, but first they have to go through their other four opponents before a final-day showdown in Paris. Current form: Excellent, apart from that poor semi-final showing. France looked calm and composed during the World Cup and it was a surprise to many when they lost the plot on a rainy night in Sydney. Weaknesses: Michalak showed his inexperience in the wet against England. His first two clearance kicks were horribly sliced and he managed just one kick at goal on target.
Who are they? If you dont know by now, then you never will. Reigning World and European champions, Frances imperious footballing dynasty arrives in the Far East hoping to complete the unparalleled achievement of winning three major competitions in a row. Qualifying: As holders, France were not called into any competitive action, but it didnt hurt them much before Euro 2000, and they have been taking their friendlies seriously, as Scotland found out recently. Fixtures: Senegal, Seoul (31/5, 12.30 BST); Uruguay, Busan (6/6, 12.30). Denmark, Incheon (11/6, 07.30).

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

IN ALGERIA, Souad and Sherif Gasmi were able to stand on their own feet. They earned enough for a comfortable life, spending their money not only on their children, but also on their parents and a wide circle of nieces and nephews. They had no need of handouts. Mrs Gasmi, now 35, studied for years to qualify as a dentist. Her husband ran a childrens clothes shop. But, in a country crying out for qualified professionals, it is illegal for this well-educated couple to earn a living. They are asylum-seekers, and, as such, are forbidden to work. Instead, the British taxpayer gives the Gasmis pounds 148 every week. They get housing benefit too. Until their asylum application is decided, the state will fund them.
This annual report is the result of an annual census of dentists in the United States, conducted by the American Dental Association (ADA). Report data represents ADA member and non-member dentists, professionally-active dentists, and dentists who are retired or no longer in private practice. ITLL never work, the critics said. Who wants to watch a bunch of women playing basketball? What those critics forgot is that these women have game, and 50 million fans proved there is an audience hyped about womens hoops. The sport has generated its own stars, giving girls the chance to have hoop dreams of their own. Instead of wanting to be like Mike, now they want to be like Cynthia Cooper, Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Dawn Staley and Chamique Holdsclaw.
Basketball gives the body a full workout INSIDE or outside, where theres a basketball hoop, theres usually a crowd. Shots clang, bodies bang and, off the rim, players hang. And everyone has the same thing in mind: Just winning, baby. Yet for many, playing basketball is more than living out a hoop dream. Basketball, like traditional jogging and aerobic sessions, is a form of exercise that keeps the body fit.

Heather Barbour supplies gifts for giving. Official gift giving is what corporations and public sector organizations do for a variety of purposes, including acknowledging a state visit, thanking a speaker, honouring a service or achievement, celebrating retirements and anniversaries and marking an institutional milestone. A gift can speak volumes about the organization that gives it; hence it is not something to be taken lightly. Barbours gifts are ambassadors for Canadian art and craftsmanship. Tributes represents artists and artisans across Canada: wood carvers, glass blowers, painters, Innu carvers and Haida designers whose works are manufactured in pewter. David and Lee Bernett from Ste. Agathe des Montes, Quebec, carve in marble and soapstone; Ottawas Richard Bond developed a unique technique for sand blasting an image onto stained glass. Hoselton Sculptures of Coburn, Ontario, creates polished aluminum sculptures from recycled aluminum that run, according to Barbour, from “the affordable to the unique.” Its because she can supply gifts from the affordable to the unique that organizations keep coming to Heather Barbour.

This academic satire is about two professors and their families. Howard Belsey is a white secular liberal, a specialist in Rembrandt, who is engaged in ideological warfare with a visiting professor, Monty Kippes, a conservative Christian scholar from Trinidad. Each character in the story is undermined by his or her self-deceptions. Howards attachment to theoretical knowledge seems to preclude understanding or controlling his adulterous behavior. Smith brilliantly draws these and other characters and gently but wittily pierces their illusions and pretensions. Howards African-American wife, Kiki, is one of the few characters to offer emotional or moral ballast, along with her son Jerome, who rejects his parents secularism for a newfound Christianity.

Brokers could be forgiven for wondering just where their next market is coming from. Scarcely had we got over the shock of the Independent demise and the problems that that caused in terms of finding alternative markets than confirmation came through that Groupama UK was being put up for sale by its French parent. A spokesman for Groupama in the UK tells us that its aggressive plans for 2001 continue as before, and that in the first six months of the year the company is right in line with its corporate plan. Not only that, but the French parent will continue to support the UK organisation with its parental guarantee; and its strong security rating is maintained. So the message is very much “business as usual” while a suitable purchaser is being sought. The aim is to conclude the deal by the year end, with firm offers in hand during September, we are told. Nevertheless, much as we might hope that a new parent will leave the company to trade separately and go its own way, logic says that the theory of economies of scale will prevail and that the business will be merged and another separate entity removed from the trading environment.

DUBLIN — Staff Sgt. Mary Fanning leaned over a wounded patient and then jotted some notes down on his chart in the combat hospitals intensive care unit. The makeshift medical complex is equipped with everything a regular U.S. hospital might have: ventilators, X-ray machines, dental equipment, a pharmacy, a laboratory and a triage wing. But Fanning was not in a foreign country. Rather, the nurse was participating in Golden Medic 2006, the U.S. Army Reserves largest medical command and control exercise. The exercise drew soldiers from all over the country to Camp Parks in Dublin.
Soldier Armed It is the recognition of every soldier as a first responder that has helped drive the latest addition to the Armys training arena, the Medical Simulation Training Center (MSTC). The MSTC initiative standardizes the medical training needed to give soldiers the skills to save wounded soldiers in combat. MSTCs teach both medics and nonmedical personnel to be a soldier first and a medic second and will be used for both combat medical advanced skills training and combat life-saver (CLS) training. The new training centers provide realistic wartime training to ensure that in the very distracting situation of war, they will be able to perform their duties both as a soldier and a medic/CLS. Some even have medical obstacle courses for soldiers where the sights and sounds of war are present and instructors place stress on the soldier in the training.
sydney life coach

LIFE isnt easy. It may sound pat, but its true. So therefore its a bit surprising that more of us dont have life coaches to guide us through the complex maze that is modern-day living. For those unfamiliar with a concept which is more common in America than it is in the UK, a “life coach” could be seen as the friend who always encourages you - a cross between a mentor and a practical adviser. OK, so you pay them for their advice, but they do always have your best interests at heart. For Fiona Reed, an Edinburgh-based coach who has been helping clients for almost two years, her role usually sees her operating as a “friend” with no vested interest and a pro-active approach to lifes problems. Forget psychiatrists and psychotherapists (after all, you know you cant blame your mother for absolutely everything), life coaching involves a positive approach to those issues in a persons life that require practical change.
By Fae Redding Creativity is vital in people becoming all they can be, says Mickey Burns. Burns is what I consider a life coach, someone who encourages you to be the best you can be and teach you to make the changes necessary to accomplish that elusive be.

Atlanta used cars
July 8th, 2008
Used cars have been the butt of jokes ever since the days of Henry Ford. So its no wonder some 1.3 million Americans paid as much as $3,000 extra last year for the added reassurance of buying a “certified” used car. Automakers have begun applying some of the same marketing muscle to certified used cars that they do to new cars. Earlier this month, Toyota Motor Corp.s Lexus luxury division launched 1.9 percent financing for up to 48 months on certified RX SUVs as well as ES and LS sedans. General Motors Corp. just started offering 3.9 percent for up to 60 months on seven popular certified models including Chevrolets Silverado pickup truck and Buicks Century sedan. But it turns out “certified” is no guarantee of a problem-free car. Lexus and the other manufacturers certifying vehicles dont actually inspect the vehicles or make any repairs. Dealers do. And some dealers are better than others. In addition, dealers generally have to pay for new parts out of their own pockets. Finally, unlike new cars, no two used cars are the same. Bottom line: Quality is bound to vary from vehicle to vehicle.
MORATORIUM ON NEW CAR PURCHASES Would you buy a used car from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius?
`NOW is the best time to buy a used car, says Federation of Motorcar and Credit Companies of Malaysia President Datuk Tony Khor. He believes current used-car prices are at their most competitive. Of late, a few used-car buyers have been slashing prices. Apparently, used-car sales have tapered off recently. Has the National Automotive Policy (NAP) framework made used cars suddenly more affordable and competitive? Or can the recently announced tariff make an impact on used- car prices? `There is no direct correlation, Khor says of the used-car industry and the NAP. If new car prices are not or only marginally affected, then the demand for used cars in Malaysia would not be significantly different.

E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?

WASHINGTON — The book business is turning to a new page: on- demand printing. Heres how it could work in the not-very-distant future. Looking for a volume of retro rhymes, some bell-bottomed bibliophile will bop into a local shop and browse menus on the computer screen of an automatic book machine. Passing a credit card through an electronic reader, the customer will transmit an order to a digital library, which will then bounce a signal off a satellite to the book machines built-in printer. This emerging technology could resurrect thousands of titles that have gone out of print and exponentially expand the choices for book buyers.

family law san jose
July 8th, 2008
How does it work? Lets compare it with a typical scenario. Mom and Dad are getting a divorce, and they cant agree on anything. Each of them goes to a lawyer to find out what their rights and obligations are. First, the lawyers explain the law, and then send them to mediation to see what they can settle. Mediation is unsuccessful, and the parents go back to the lawyers. Second, the lawyers try negotiating between themselves, but still cant resolve the issues. So, the lawyers launch into the third stage — the litigation process. They hold examinations for discovery and may bring interim court applications. Both sides may hire experts to support their positions. They line up the witnesses, and everyone heads down to the courthouse. There, a judge hears about the family for a few hours or a few days, and makes a decision everyone has to live with for the rest of their lives. The litigation process is expensive, time-consuming, and emotionally draining, with no guarantee that either party will be happy with the outcome. In CFL, the process stops short of the litigation stage — both parties and their lawyers sign a written contract confirming that none of them will go to court under any circumstances. They must negotiate their own settlement. Instead of using their resources to do battle against one another, they jointly hire a team of experts to help them solve their problems. Mom and Dad may meet with a therapist to help them put aside the emotional issues of the divorce. The therapist may work on improving their communication skills so that meetings are more productive. Mom and Dad may also hire a child specialist to identify their childrens needs, and help them build a parenting plan that meets those needs. Mom and Dad both agree to make full financial disclosure, and they may hire a financial planner to help them sort out the dollars and cents of their divorce. The financial planner might present budget alternatives, or present a range of financial planning alternatives. All these experts are neutral third parties and do not favour one side over the other. The lawyers serve several functions in the CFL process. They must make sure each client sticks to the contract and negotiates in good faith. For example, if one learns that his/her client is withholding information, he or she must advise the other side that the process is at an end (to preserve solicitor-client privilege, they reveal no details of the problem). The lawyers also supervise the process, and coordinate the joint hiring of the third party experts. They set the agenda for the four-way meetings with the other party. They familiarize themselves with their own clients needs and fears, and give him or her independent legal advice. When the process is successful, they write up the terms of the negotiated settlement.
Family Law and Family Values. Mavis Maclean, ed. Oxford, United Kingdom, and Portland, OR: Hart Publishing, 2005. Pp. xi+342. $80.00 cloth; $44.00 paper. It is the nature of expectations about family relationships, and the extent to which the values that are incorporated in family law coincide with these expectations, that is the subject of this rich collection of 18 essays edited by Maclean. Like the previous two volumes on family law that Maclean edited, this one is also based on meetings held at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Onati, Spain and, like its predecessors, the approach here is interdisciplinary and its scope is European and North American. The book is divided into five sections. The first presents different approaches to the study of the nature of family values alongside those values put in place by legal systems; the next three chapters deal with the regulation of the relationships between adults and children, adult couples, and adult children and elderly parents, respectively; while the final chapter deals with diversity and standardization in family values and family law.
